I'd like to go, but my budget can't affor more than $900 just for a flight to Chicago...

Fun fact, notice how X JAPAN always plan overseas concerts during high season. Never mind this one, they can't choose the date for Lollapalooza, but the others... that's how good are their management D: epic flaw to not consider the % between locals and people who pretends to come from other countries. Nothing that I haven't mentioned before, but still makes me LOL everytime.

I hope they will go.

Estoy de acuerdo con Winter y Eric es una muy buena oportunidad, esperemos que Yoshiki y Toshi lleguen en forma. Ojalà muchos del foro puedan ir, yo me conformo con ver los videos.

Ah, yes, surely there could be some sober hide tribute, like his guitar being on stage. But if they don't wanna get boo-ed, 5 people will perform, with no screens, no playback, no fancy scenarios, no dramatic interludes, just plain 5 people playing songs.

It's indeed a great risk. X hasn't done this since the 80's, where they had to catch on rock festivals and earn the headbangs of the audience. And that's precisely why I love it. Either it will be a great victory or an epic fail.

I still think that chances are it will be a great victory. Imagine Prologue ~World Anthem intro with the "Allright you motherfuckers, are you ready?" followed by Blue Blood, Silent Jealousy, or Vanishing Love... that'd be sexy. But even soft songs like Rusty Nail could be the flavor that US audiences like today. Maybe not 10 or 15 years ago, but now definitely yeah.

Hey!! who said punks bring knives to the concerts?? I demand respect, or I will stab you inflado.gif

C'mon, X Japan won't be boo-ed, Toshi won't fall down after a beer bottle hits his head... have you seen Lollapalooza lineups?? it's not like a heavy metal fest where Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth are in main stage; so many different music styles will bring the opportunity to be accepted by people who go there for the music, and that's it. Yoshiki knows about it, and of course they will play a ballad and songs as Rusty Nail; they don't need to change.

Remember that not all people like fast and heavy songs... think!!! damn it ¬_¬

YES!

I think there's a higher possibility of old songs; since they're back in the "indies spirit" AND they played Blue Blood a year ago, right?
I wonder how many songs they'll be able to play.

Don't know about Lollapalooza, but on most festivals the headliner plays a standard set, about 2 hours.

http://2009.lollapalooza.com/events/daily/2009/08/07/1/hbha The last year's schedule.

As you can see it's possible they clash with another big band (like Depeche Mode and Kings of Leon on the first day). Also, only Depeche Mode got a full 2 hour set, the other headliners got 1,5 hours and most other bands got just an hour.

A 1 hour set seems to be nice to me, they will hit the stage by storm, destroy everything and walk away leaving the audience thinking: Wow, they rock!

A 2 hour set will be full of never ending singalongs like IV intro (5 or more mins) Endless rain ending (10 or more mins) Yoshiki screaming "We are..." for another 5 mins, a boring technique-less drum solo (10 mins) and there you go: 30 mins that could be used in a better way, also, since both Yoshiki and Toshi are on it's way to recovery, theres no need for them to try way too hard.

Talking about the festival itself, as I said before, it was about time for X Japan to be on a western festival, cant believe that even Dir en Gray and Moi dix Mois have already played on western festivals.

I cant see any japanese band right now headlining a western festival cause none of them have been able to break into the mainstream cause they are usually related to anime and the few bands/musicians that are not related to anime are losing quality (Sigh) are way too "alternative" (I mean weird) to be on a fest (Boris) way too underground (Sabbat) way to "anime lookalike" -even if they are not- for people outside the japanese music scene (Versailles) or simply like to play on safe ground without taking any risks (Galneryus) so, for me, X Japan seems to be the perfect choice: Commercial rock, heavy (but still commercial) stuff, nice ballads, nice look, a huge fan base (which covers from the japanophile fan to the heavy metal fan who dont give a damn about japanese music) and so on... And there's no other japanese band that can have all this except for X Japan.

Yeah, they should really watch out with that. But I don't think they'll do the exact same thing as they've been doing in TD for the past years, it's something completely different now, and they know it. I'm really excited to see what they will change!

The US tv station, Fuse, showed some of the bigger bands play 2-3 songs from I think last year's festival. Though, the only one I can remember seeing is Jane's Addiction, cause all the others were crap. (It wasn't aired live, it was a couple months after the concert happened.)

Mc89:
As far as I know they usually broadcast one or two songs of certain artists on MTV, or VH1 but not the whole performance of a band (I may be mistaken) but still, it could be really stupid for whoever is handling X Japan exposure to the media not to record and broadcast a few songs on MTV or perhaps the whole show... It seems that Yoshiki have some famous friends that could be useful for his plans.
______________
Baki:

If by "related" you mean japanese, you are mistaken, both Moi dix Mois and Dir en Grey played along lots of western bands, Moi dix Mois were headlining the festival while Dir en Gray were one of the first bands to perform:
http://www.wave-gotik-treffen.de/english/p...hp?reqYear=2006
http://www.wacken.com/en/woa2010/main-hist...7/billing-2007/
If you mean related in the music genre, well, yes, usually festivals have related bands on it's bill (sometimes truly related, sometimes not related like almost every single "alternative" festival in which you can find Portishead next to Live, 311 or Counting Crows, lol) but since I couldnt understand what d'you mean by related it may be just me being confused...

Bastards... I think I dont know them or what kind of music do they play, but that name reminds me a punk band that a friend seem to name before...

And yes, I mean mainstream festivals, sadly I dont know current japanese underground scene so I may be missing some nice bands!

this is what I imagine the set list being:

1. rusty nail
2. week end
3. fuck around and do stupid shit on piano and drums for 45 minutes
4. one of the crappy new songs
5. X

end of show

I don't think they will bring old X's songs, because it wouldn't fit with the plans they have.
If they want to be known worldwide they have to choose the more easy-listening, catchy, and commercial songs they have.
The set list of this festival won't differ that much from the ones they actually use at their concerts. Hopefully without all the shit that lots of people here already mentioned (holograms, playback, crazy jogging, etc.), but the essence will still remain the same.

Personally I'll be happy if they cut out all that shit and focus on the songs, regardless if it's a Rusty Nail-Weekend start as always.

Maybe they'll perfom Art of Life, Kurenai, Rusty Nail, Week End and I.V.?, I can't imagine them playing Endless Rain or Tears to an US audience (excluding fans). duda.gif

They could perfectly perform Endless Rain, Tears, or Forever Love to a new audience if they actually played the original songs... not 10 minute acapella choruses or acoustic versions where they expect the audience to sing... just the plain old album versions.

Personally I think they could go as far as going from Vanishing Love to Forever Love and have good reception on both sounds. What worries me is not the song selection, but the performance... they must take it as srs business.
